Dr. Tullis found his passion for periodontics and dental implantology after first working as a chemical process engineer for a Swiss multinational company. In 2010 he decided to change careers to help people improve their health and returned to school to get the necessary training to become a periodontist.
Dr. Tullis earned his DDS at the University of Texas in Houston. After dental school, he completed 4 years of residency training, including a 1-year residency in Advanced General Dentistry through NYU-Lutheran, and a 3-year residency in periodontics and implant dentistry at the University of Missouri Kansas City. During dental school, Dr. Tullis completed honors clerkships in both oral surgery and periodontics. He was the president of the student research group and community service chair for the Alpha Omega dental fraternity. While a dental student, he published research on 3D imaging of the jawbone for bone grafting and dental implants. During residency, he designed and completed a randomized clinical trial on bone grafting techniques. Dr. Tullis is board-eligible and anticipates completing board certification in periodontology by the time of this magazine publication.
Dr. Tullis believes that we appreciate all we have been given, by serving others. He has volunteered in several capacities inside and outside of dentistry: including a 2-year full-time missionary service in Brazil, a facial reconstruction mission trip to Peru and several Missions of Mercy in the U.S. He believes that when we put the patients’ best interest first, happiness and success naturally follow. His training and philosophy include saving natural teeth when possible and placing dental implants when necessary. Periodontics is fascinating because it is a practice of oral medicine. The mouth is intimately connected to the rest of the body and research has found associations between periodontal health and almost every major disease of chronic inflammation.
In 2020, Dr. Tullis founded Southern Colorado Periodontics & Implants when Dr. Brian Fitzpatrick retired and passed him the baton. A nomination to be a “Top Dentist” involves the entire team striving for excellence. The SoCO Perio team is eager to work with you and your dentist to help you achieve optimum health.
Outside of the clinic, he enjoys summer/winter sports, music, and hiking and biking with his family. In the fall they love to root for BYU football, the Saints and the Chiefs. Mrs. Tullis is an operating room nurse at UCHealth. The Tullis family is thrilled to put down roots in Colorado Springs!
